Every rare once in a way too long while,
fist light is not so bad.
And we can clean, and take stock and prepare our work.
Prepare.
Every once in a while, first light is light.
And quiet is not a dirty word.
It doesn’t happen very often. But when it does,
This is what I see.
On a good day.

Don’t ever, ever stop writing and posting Ian. I don’t think I could be a nurse without your inspiration.
Beautiful my friend.
aah…….The Serenity…lull before The Storm !!!
I remember night duty at the ‘old’ hospice on the lake. First light on a weekend summer morning, water like glass, willows draped on the water’s edge, bird song and the crisp cool air preparing for the heat of the day. All this is a background for the night that had been working with the profound nursing work of supporting people trying their best to live with death. Transcendant.
Best sunrise for me was in 2000. 4:30am at Royal North Shore ICU watching the sunrise across Sydney Harbour with all the tall ships anchored there, all patients asleep (funny that) and I swear not 1 machine beeped for a good 5 minutes.
Angie, yep I remember one particular night shift in Alice Springs, watching the sun rise, talking about life, hearing life start to stir once again. It was lovely.
i work in a rural hospital, the best thing about night shift is hearing all the birds start chorusing at dawn. the sound is so beautiful it’s impossible not to fall in love with the day (and i know my shift is almost done!)
