project N: from little things big things grow.
By impactEDnurse • Feb 26th, 2008 • Category: ectopics
I have spoken before about the controversial drive to actively recruit nurses from countries with a less developed health system to fill shortfalls in our own hospitals.
Currently our own emergency department is benefiting from some excellent nursing talents ‘imported’ from Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
Whilst I was talking to one of these nurses, he happened to mention that the nursing school where he trained was in desperate need of some decent nursing textbooks. In fact many of the textbooks they rely on date from the 1970’s and early 1980’s.
Well, I think we can collectively do something about this.
It is a simple thing that might have a great impact on the quality of training available to these nursing students.
And so Project N is born. Payback time.
I am asking you to make a small donation to go towards purchasing some supplies of Textbooks. They are looking for Medical-Surgical nursing, Anatomy and Physiology as well as books on evidence based nursing.
Use the ‘gift me’ link over on the right there where you can make your donation via PayPal. All donations made until the end of this project will go to purchasing textbooks.
I will keep you all informed how much we are raising, ask for suggestions on the best books to purchase and let you know when a box of books has been delivered.
It would also be great if you could spread a little viral goodness by letting others know of Project N, be it via blog, nursing forums or emails.
As I have always said about nurses….. the sum of us is far, far greater than the one of us.
Amount raised so far: $408.00

Post the the address i can send quite a few books to them direct.. A&P hasn’t changed much in the past 10yrs, and i no longer need them
Done! Just so long as you ensure there is no corruption scheme….damn Hot Doc last night.
Are there updated books out there that specialize in nursing care of common diseases not found in Western countries? I would guess that dengue fever, malaria, etc are not widely discussed in general med/surg books printed in US or Australia. Might be a slick idea to send some of those too.
Randomly, I found some photos on Flickr from a hospital in Nigeria with captions. Looks most of the stuff/drugs are donated which is fine except that when the stuff breaks, there is no one who knows how to fix it…
Not in any way trying to rain on your parade, but try asking a few of your local medical schools and community colleges if they have old textbooks they need to get rid of due to them being outdated?
Then all the money could go for shipping.
thanks Randy,
we already have our first load of second hand textbooks ready to send.
[...] Project N is moving forward. A huge thank-you to all those who have contributed towards the purchase of some new nursing textbooks to be sent to a training Hospital in Nigeria. [...]
Ian:
I am low on funds but have many nursing texts and references (they’re not dated; from 2006). May I send these as a contribution?
If so, email details to localtint@gmail.com
Much luck!
Hi I have several 2nd hand nursing texts I no longer require. I’d love to send them to somewhere that needs them. If you would like them let me know and where you are and I’ll get them to you. Karen
