um….I think we just found Nemo.

By impactEDnurse • Aug 3rd, 2010 • Category: not just a nurse.

27 year old male presents with dislocated L shoulder.
Absolutely no idea that he had Nemo stuck to the underside of his R shoe. And not the faintest idea how he may have gotten there.
Patient laughed so hard he nearly dislocated his R shoulder.
Wierd.

A recent study published in the British Medical Journal, explores the effects of incivility amongst medical colleagues and the direct impact this may have on patient safety.
In a [...]

By impactEDnurse • May 19th, 2010 • Category: not just a nurse., the nurses desk:

I was just sitting on the toilet (no, really) and the thought came to me….that although there are plenty of conferences and workshops on the various specialties of nursing, mostly directed at improving our provision of patient centered care, there has not been much (to my knowledge) available with [...]

Twice up close.

By impactEDnurse • Apr 25th, 2010 • Category: not just a nurse.

As a nurse, I have seen death on more occasions than I care to imagine.
Twice death has seen me.
Once, as a very young boy I was playing beside a pool when I slipped and fell in.
I could not swim, and I cannot recall if I even tried. But I do remember at some point a [...]

Asclepius:
The symbol on the left depicting a serpent  coiled around a cypress branch, is The Rod of Asclepius.
Asclepius was a god from Greek mythology. The son of Apollo, he was skilled in the both the medical and the magical arts and was even said to have resuscitated patients who had died.
Unfortunately, this unbalancing of the [...]

a clutch of questions ( we need to engage).

By impactEDnurse • Mar 20th, 2010 • Category: not just a nurse., the nurses desk:

The public health system has evolved into a large and complex dish. Despite this complexity it has only limited resources and a limited budget for which many individuals and professional groups jostle their vested interests for a larger piece of the pie.
What exactly is the mission statement of the health system as a whole? Is [...]

Supine on the bed.
Listening to the tunk, tunk, tunk of a large crow hopping on the roof tiles.
Down to the drainpipe, where it pauses to scrape its beak a bit, before tunking back up to the ridge-cap and repeating.
Flip back the covers and down to the kettle.
Not wanting to turn on any [...]
